* In winter, the Circum-Baikal Railway tour is carried out by heated train that comprises 1st class carriages only. The price is 9400 Rub per person. Tour is available on each Wednesday and Thusday from February 22 to April 30, 2017.

 

Comfortable train moves along Lake Baikal shore by the Old railroad through 39 tunnels and numerous bridges built during the Tsarist Russia in 1902-1904.
The train stops at the most significant architectural sites and scenic viewpoints where you could take memorable photos.
On the Circum-Baikal Railway tour, you will discover old Baikal settlements, various tunnels, stone galleries, supporting walls, bridges and viaducts.
The train stops along the way 3-5 times (depending on its schedule). Off-the-train excursion take from 15 min to 1 hour. During the stop at Polovinnaya railway station (at 110km) you will be able to swim in the Baikal.

Two types of trains run along the Circum-Baikal Railway: Electric Train and Steam Locomotive Train.

Going on the tour bear in mind, that
– there are no shops or cafes along the way
– not all carriages in the train have lavatories (there are only 4 bio toilets in 7 carriages).
– you cannot charge your cell phone in the carriages
– Internet and mobile connection may not work because of rocks (in some places there is no connection at all)

Please note! You should book the “Circum-Baikal Railway tour” in advance, about 2 weeks before your visit.

 

The Circum-Baikal Railway tour by Electric Train

During the summer 2017, the electric trains go daily
– except each Tuesday
– in June except 2nd, 3rd, 9th, 10th
– in July except 15th, 16th.

Other moths of 2017:
April: train runs on Wednesday, Thursday
May: on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday. During the two fist weeks of the May, trains don’t go, because of public holidays.
September: on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday.
October: on Wednesday, Thursday and October 1st and 2nd.

The trains have carriages of 1st, 2nd and 3rd class.

 

Schedule of the Circum-Baikal Railway tour by electric train:

The itinerary depends on the day of the week.

Option #1: Monday, Thursday, Saturday
1. Transfer to Port Baikal: bus journey by the picturesque Baikal highway from the stop next to the Drama Theatre of Irkutsk (14, Karl Marx str.) to Listvyanka. Then ferry crossing to Port Baikal.
2. A seven-hour journey by the Circum-Baikal Railway with stops and excursions.
3. Arrival to Slyudyanka village, a 20-minute stop.
4. Transfer to Irkutsk railway station.

Option #2: Wednesday, Friday, Sunday
1. Transfer from Irkutsk railway station to Slyudyanka village by train, a 30-minute stop. Slydanka is located 166 kilometers away from Irkutsk. The station’s building is constructed from white and pink marble and is a true piece of art.
2. A seven-hour journey by the Circum-Baikal Railway with stops and excursions.
3. Arrival to Port Baikal.
4. Transfer to Irkutsk: ferry crossing to Listvyanka and bus journey by the picturesque Baikal highway to the stop next to the Drama Theater of Irkutsk (14, Karl Marx str.).

You have to arrive at Irkutsk railway station or bus stop next the Drama theatre 20 minutes before the boarding and wait for the train/bus to arrive. For convenience, print out “Кругобайкальский Экспресс” sign, the staff will tell you the directions or look for the staff with the same sign.

The train’s average speed is 20-30 km/h, so you will be able to enjoy the beauty of the lake to the fullest. The stops in the most interesting places (up to 1 hour) will give you a possibility to take a walk.

 
Departure and arrival points:

Monday: Departure at 08:30, 09:20, 10:10 from the Drama theatre*. Arrival at Irkutsk train station at 22:27.
Wednesday: Departure at 06:37 from Irkutsk train station. Arrival at Kirov Square in Irkutsk.
Thursday: Departure at 08:30, 09:20, 10:10 from the Drama theatre*. Arrival at Irkutsk train station at 22:27.
Friday: at 07:57 from the railway station. Arrival at Kirov Square in Irkutsk.
Saturday: Departure at 06:50, 07:40, 08:30 from the Drama* theatre. Arrival at Irkutsk train station at 20:34.
Sunday: at 07:57 from the railway station. Arrival at Kirov Square in Irkutsk.

Train description:

All carriages are fitted with screens showing a video about Baikal in three languages: Russian, English and Chinese.
The train consists of carriages of three comfort classes:
The 1st class: soft armchairs are arranged in pairs in front of each other around the table with a panoramic view of natural landscape and Lake Baikal.
The 2nd class: soft armchairs are arranged in pairs and by three seats one after another (as in an aircraft) with tip-up tables.
The 3rd class: triple sofa-like seats arranged in front of each other with a table between them.

 

Price of the Circum-Baikal Railway tour by electric train:

15th May – 15th July and September 1st – October 26th, 2017
1st class: 7400 rub per person
2nd class: 7000 rub per person
3rd class: 7200 rub per person

16th July – 30th August, 2017:
1st class: 7800 rub per person
2nd class: 7400 rub per person
3rd class: 7600 rub per person

The price includes:
– Transfer (ferry, bus)
– Train ride
– Excursions during the train stops (Russian language)

The price does not include:
– Transfer from your hotel to a departure point. Price 1000 rub
– English-speaking guide. Guide services for the whole tour day cost about 6000 rub.
– Excess baggage fees (for over 30x40x50): 400 rub.
– Meals:
1. Breakfast (2 sandwiches and tea): 250 rub
2. Lunch or Dinner (baked potato either with meat, or with chicken, or with fish and tea): 650 rub.
3. Lunch-box (eithe mashed potato or rice with chicken, vegetable salad, tea and cake): 450 rub.

The Circum-Baikal Railway tour by Steam Locomotive Train

During May-September 2017, the Steam Locomotive Trains go on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday
– except 10th, 11th, 17th, 18th of May
– except 15th and 16th of July

Other moths of 2017:
April: the tour will be carried out on 29th and 30th
October: on Saturday, Sunday, and 1st, 11th, 12th of October.

The carriages of the Steam Locomotive Train have no classes.

The itinerary depends on the day of the week.

Option #1: Thursday, Sunday
1. Start at 08:00 or 08:30. Bus journey from the stop next to the Drama Theatre of Irkutsk (14, Karl Marx str.) to Listvyanka.
2. At 09:00 or 09:30 ferry crossing from Listvyanka to Port Baikal.
3. At 10:40 an eight-hour journey by the Circum-Baikal Railway starts. The train makes several stops along the way.
4. At 21:00 arrival to Irkutsk.

Option #2: Wednesday, Saturday
1. At 08:00 the train departs from Irkutsk railway station to Slyudyanka village.
2. An eight-hour journey by the Circum-Baikal Railway with stops and excursions.
3. Arrival to Port Baikal at 19:30. A visit to the Baikal railway museum.
4. Ferry crossing to Listvyanka. At 21:00-22:00 bus journey to Irkutsk.
