Travelers to the Baikal are given a chance this weekend to see two exotic competitions that will take place on the frozen waters of the lake: Sled Dog Race and XII Ice Marathon.
The Baikal Sled Dog Race a takes place annually in March. It is also known as the “Baikal Race”. The length of the route in 2016 will be over 500 km (310 mi).
Tortuous and difficult race route crosses dense taiga, the frozen surface of the Baikal, bays of the Angara River with its steep descents and turns. Despite the fact that the raceway is carefully prepared, the Siberian snow cyclones always make some adjustments.
The rout passes through the Baikal National Park and the Baikal natural biosphere reserve.
Date and time: 5-10 March 2016, 17:00 (Irkutsk time)
Starting and finish point: Irkutsk, Solnechniy district, icebreaker “Angara”.
The XII Baikal Ice Marathon is the world’s only marathon between two opposite shores of the planet’s deepest lake!
The Ice Marathon is both psychologically and physically demanding, as the clear air and flat terrain means runners can make out the distant finish line almost as soon as they begin – giving them nothing to focus on but how far they are from their goal.
The utterly featureless landscape gives little or no sense of perspective to competitors. It is a long, cold, lonely 42.2 km trail across the barren white landscape, where progress is marked only by checkpoints positioned at 5 km intervals (with hot drinks, food, and, for the brave, more vodka).
Date and time: 6 March 2016. Boarding the transport vehicles to the starting line is to begin at 08:30 a.m.
Venue: Depending on ice conditions and those of the race course, the starting line of the Baikal Ice Marathon will be located either in the settlement of Listvyanka on the western shore of Lake Baikal or near the stations of Tankhoy or Pereyomnaya on the eastern shore of Baikal. Final location of the starting point and time of Marathon start shall be indicated a day before the commencement of Marathon, and can be changed by the Organizer even a day before the Marathon commences.
Cost of participation: EURO 545. The cost includes registration, start fee, 2 nights’ accommodation on twin room sharing basis with 2 breakfasts, one lunch and 2 dinners, arrival and departure transfer.
