Europe’s largest ice skating rink opens in Moscow

On November 28, 2014, the largest artificial ice rink of 20,510 square meters opened its doors to skaters at the VDNKh (Rus: ВДНХ, National Exhibition of Economic Achievements) in Moscow. It ranked first in terms of area among all Europe rinks. The second one is the FlevOnice rink located in the Netherlands, which is 1,310 square meters less than the Russian rink.

The VDNKh rink has a capacity of 4,500 people. Its area is split into separate zones : Big Circle, Infinity, Lovers’ Alley, Children’s Playground and the Hockey Field.

The main highlight of the rink is backlights which illuminate 5,000 square meters of ice, facades of buildings, fences, and a pedestrian bridge. 
For convenience of visitors, the area of the rink comprises six equipment rental pavilions and skate sharpening stations, two medical areas, three changing rooms, open-air cafes and restaurants.

 

 

Interesting fact: 
The VDNKh rink is equipped with chilling machines that were used at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Open hours and fees: 

Open daily, except Mondays. 
Tuesday through Thursday: 
From 11:00am to 3:00pm – 200 rub
From 5:00pm to 11:00pm – 300 rub
From 3:00pm to 5:00pm – a technical break.

On Friday, weekends and holidays:
From 10:00am to 3:00pm – 300 rub
From 5:00pm to 11:00pm – 400 rub
From 3:00pm to 5:00pm – a technical break.

The rink is located in the area of the National Exhibition of Economic Achievements (VDNKh) between the Peoples’ Friendship fountain and the Stone Flower fountain.
